The AB-CRC is expanding the numbers of specialists with training in the biosecurity context. AB-CRC partners have identified a broad range of specialists supporting the national biosecurity system. From an emerging infectious disease point of view, emerging viral diseases are the most significant.
Expanded training opportunities, prinicipally in the form of postgraduate research scholarships but also supported by the development of new and targeted postgraduate Masters units, short courses and workshops, are targeting each of the following speciality areas:
- Bioengineering - including nanochemistry as it applies to biosensors
- Epidemiology
- Information Management - including electronic capture, storage, analysis and dissemination of surveillance and other biosecurity-related information
- Mathematical Modelling
- Molecular Biology - specialising in technologies including proteomics, genomics, molecular epidemiology and bioinformatics
- Pathobiology - including microbiology, virology, bacteriology, parasitology, entomology, veterinary pathology, immunology/immunochemistry and disease ecology
- Risk Assessment and Communication
- Sociology
- Spatial Sciences - including remote sensing and geographic information systems
Description of the Awards
Further PhD and Masters-by-Research scholarships (tax exempt) may be awarded within the current ABCRCs lifetime. Full PhD scholarships of $25,000/year were previously offered, as well as top-up stipends to Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and other awards, to bring the stipend up to $25,000/year. Masters scholarships of up to $22,500/year were also offered. Students were strongly encouraged to apply for other awards to increase the likelihood of obtaining an AB-CRC scholarship.
All scholarship holders receive a generous operating allowance and a professional development allowance of $2,000/year, as well as industry-relevant professional development opportunities as a member of an international research and education network.
Scholarships are offered through the AB-CRC’s university partners – Curtin University of Technology, James Cook University, Murdoch University, The University of Queensland and The University of Sydney. Depending on the research focus, AB-CRC postgraduate research students can also be based at the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory in Geelong, or state or commonwealth government agriculture or health departments.
Selection of Postgraduate Research Projects
Postgraduate Research Proposals are invited in May of each year from AB-CRC partner organisations. These proposals are ranked and shortlisted for advertising by the AB-CRC Management and Scholarship Committees.
