BRISC includes scanning for new organisms, disease outbreaks and for environmental factors associated with major change. Risk assessment and analysis is used to connect organisms and disease emergence with environmental drivers.

Environmental scanning is an approach that:

  • Provides a system to organise information flow
  • Detects scientific, technical, social, and political trends and events important to the institution
  • Provides early warning for managers of changing external conditions
  • Defines potential threats, opportunities, changes implied by trends and events
  • Identifies critical uncertainties and hotspots for monitoring which triggers more creative processes of thinking around implications
  • Promotes a future orientation in the thinking of its people
  • Enables decision-makers to understand current and potential changes to determine organisational strategies
